Second Day.
The weather was again all that could be desired by pleasure-seekers ; but if anything rather hot, in consequence of which the publicans' booth, under the control of host Caudwell, was well patronised. The proceedings were slightly marred or delayed by a protest having been lodged in the Ladies' Purse after the second heal , and which had to be considered before the final heat could be run. After hearing considerable evidence, the Stewards dismissed the protest, the rider (H. George) being reprimanded. The results were as follow :—: — Town Platb, of £10 — Handicap race ; open to all comers. Distance, 2£ miles. J. M'DonneU's Merrybird, 7st (Barclay) 1 T. G-eorge's Shamrock,. lOat Jhb ... ... 2 T. Dwyer's Edaluciss 3 This was a most popular win. Shamrock, being considered too fleet for his opponents, was allowed to make the running, closely followed by the other two, until a short distance from home, when Merrybird was called upon and answered gamely, winning a good race by a length, amid the cheers of the onlookers. Ladies' Purse, of £5— Open to all comers} excepting winners of Waipori Handicap and Town Plate. Mile heats. No. weight less than 10 stone. B. Tohill's Bushman (H. George) 311 GK Welsh's Lady Ethei 13 2 P. Kodgera 1 Heatherboy 2 2 Miss King and Scrubber also ran. Lady Ethel pulled off the first heat, but had not sufficient "go " in her for the second and third heats. Open Hack Eace, of £3— Half-mile heals j no weight less than 9 stone. J. Johnston's Earl of Lynne (George) 11 J. Henderson's First King ... ... 3 2 T. Arthur's Little Fraud 2 Tommy Dodd and Wee Fanny also ran. Wee Fanny bolted at the start, and was out of the race. Earl of Lynne won the first heab easily, but for the second was hard pushed by First King, the former being declared the winner by half a head. Consoiation Handicap, of £4— For all beaten horses. Distance, H mile?. T. Dwyer's Miss King (Potts) 1 T. Dwyer'B Edaluciss 2 F. Oudaille's Wee Fanny 3 Miss King had the race all her own way. Hospital Eaob, the rider of the winning horse to be presented with a guinea whip. T. George's The Goat (S. George) 1 P. Rodgers 1 Heatherboy 2 Schoolboy and Miss King also ran. The Goat only carried 43t, and the diminutive "jock" landed her a winner by half-a-dozen lengths. Upwards of £4 was collected by Messrs M'Donnell, M'Kay, and Pilling on behalf of the Hospital. " The following athletic sports took place at intervals :—: — Handicap Foot-saob (100 yaris)— Ist prize, 15s j 2nd, 7s 6 '.—P. Curtain (scratch), 1; J. Donovan (syds), 2. J. Davidson (11yds) and J. Malone (7yds) also ran. Running Fiat Jump — Ist prize, 15s ; 2nd, 7s 6d.— P. Curtain (15ft), lj J. Donovan, 2. J. Malone also competed. 100 tabds Sack Race— lst prize, £1 ; 2a d, 10s. — P. Curtain, 1 ; J. Donovan, 2.
