LAWRENCE DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL-

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Lawrence District High School Committee was held on Thursday evening. The members present were — Messrs Smaill (in the chair), Browne (Secretary), Craig, and Jeffery. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence, which was approved, included a letter to the Education Board, drawing attention to the dilapidated state of thn Rector's residence, and requesting that the necessary repairs be effected to render it habitable before the approach of winter. — The Secretary mentioned that the foregoing letter was dispatched too late for consideration at last monthly meeting of the Board : hence no reply had as yet been received. The inward correspondence was of minor importance : The Secretary of the Education Board asked for particulars regarding the distribution of the sum collected in the school during last year as fees for extra subjects, including the amount paid to each teacher who received a share. — Mr Browne stated that the information had been supplied by the Rector. The Rector furnished a list of absentee children (of whom there were fifteen), and also a return of the attendance for the past seven weeks : the number on the roll was 318; highest number present, 282 ; average attendance, 267. VISITING COMMITTEE'S REPORT. Mr Smaill (as a member of the Visiting Committee) submitted the following report, adding that he had not an opportunity of showing it to his colleague (Mr Thompson) for approval : — Your Committee have to report having interviewed the Sector re dancing, and find that the parents of a number of the children attending school approve of the idea, and are willing to pay extra fees. Probably thirty pupils or more might be induced to join the da3B. Your Committee would suggest that a competent person be appointed to teach dancing and deportment. We would also suggest that the following repairs be given effect to without delay : — That two new sets of swings be obtained and placed in position, the timbers of the present ones being rotten and unsafe ; that a new parallel bar and bridge ladder be erected ; that a portion of the floor of the lavatory be covered with sheet lead ; that a circular ventilator be procured and erected ; that the slates of the roof of the school building be overhauled and fastened ; and that a number of hooks be fixed in each lobby. We estimate the total probable cost of repairs and improvements at £30. Be Rector's residence: Drains, 260 feet in length, have been cut, and bell-traps placed in position. Some necessary repairs are required id the interior of the building. Probable cost £20. Mr Craig said the report contained one or two matters he would like to see discussed at a fuller meeting. The Chairman mentioned that the swings were unsafe— in fact, dangerous to life and limb. It would be as well to get the swings replaced. Mr Craig : If that be the case, I will move— "That the swings be replaced, and that the remainder of the Visiting Committee's report be deferred for consideration till next meeting." ■ Mr Brown© seconded. Mr Jeffery approved of the motion, for the reason that if the report was adopted it would mean an expenditure of £50 to carry oat the improvements therein, suggested. The motion was carried. ACCOITOTS, » . , The following accounts were referred to the Visiting Committee for payment if found correct — viz., Mrs Fowler, £2 10s ; J. Caskie, £11 0a 6d ; Filling Bros., £3 175. EASTER HOLIDAYS. Mr' Craig moved, and Mr Jeffery seconded—-" That the school break-up for the Easter holidays on the 10th and reopen on the 21st April." — Carried. DATE OF COMMITTEE MEETINGS. In reply to Mr Craig, the Secretary stated that the ordinary night of meeting had been fixed for the last Wednesday in each month. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business.
