LATEST TELEGRAMS.
(From our oion Correspondent. ) Dunedin, March 31st. There was somewhat of a flutter in commercial circles to-day, when it became known that a Timaru storekeeper, who deals largely with Dunedin firms, had levanted. He leaves heavy liabilities. The Customs revenue for the quarter shows an increase of £2675, compared with the same quarter last year, and an increase for the month of March of £3035, compared with that of February. At the Police Court to-day Harry Money, a well-known racecourse attendant, was fined 10s for travelling to Port Chalmers by railway without a ticket. Singer's oil-factory, the first of the kind in New Zealand, will begin operations here next week. The owner will claim the Government bonus. A number of clergymen will interview the Hon. Thos. Dick to-morrow to try and have Sunday concerts put a stop to. The Acclamatisation Society have fixed the shooting season as follows : — For cock-pheasants and Californian quail, June Ist to July 31st ; hares, May Ist to July 31st (except in the Lake County.) The salmon ova for the Society, brought by the John Elder from England, was all dead. A letter in the " Evening Star " exposes a system of baby-farming which is carried on in Dunedin. The following are the latest cablegrams to hand :—: — Sydney, March 30th. Intelligence has been received here that Lieutenant Lucknaft, of H.M.S. Cormorant, has been murdered by the Natives - of the New Hebridies. No particulars of the outrage are yet to hand. Brisbane, March 31st. The Marquis de Ray's steamer General, with the remaining Italian colonists, has arrived at Cairns, from New Ireland. All on board are in a state of destitution. Communications are now passing between the Government of this Colony and that of New South Wales, with a view to the organisation of relief for the distressed people. ____________
