LAWRENCE ATHENÆUM

A meeting of the Committee of this Institution was held on Thursday the 21st inst. There were present: Messrs. Brown (in the chair), Copland, Squires Burns, Stenhonse and Harrop.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read aud approved of. Mr Copland, for the Sub- Committee on Reserves, handed in a plan of the reserves in Irvine-Street, prepared by Mr. M'Lean of the Survey Department. The following accouuts were passed for payment—: J. C. Brown, £2 17s ; F. 11. M'Coy, £1 Is ; J. O. Love, £21 4s. Mr Stenhouse moved, and Mr. Copland seconded, a resolution ' That the thanks of the Committee be recorded to Mr. J. C. Brown for his diligence in furthering the ends of the Institution in securing a right title to the Dales Flab Reserve. - Carried.

It was resolved that the following books presented by Mr. Vincent Pyke, M.H.R., be received with thanks, and that they be put in circulation—: " Cobden Club Essays," " Free Trade in Tuscany," " System of Laud Tenure in various Countries."

Mr. Brown- presented a /etc simile copy of the Treaty of Waitangi ; a specimen of pottery work was also received from Mr. White of Tokomairiro, with thanks. Mr. Copland proposed and Mr. Squires seconded a motion " That the life of Dr. Norman M'Leod be procured." — Carried It was resolved that Messrs Holmden and Downes be requested to audit the accounts.

It was decided on the motion of Mr. Copland, seconded by Mr. Harrop, " That no permission be given to remove the earth on the Irvine-Street Reserve, owing to the leasing of the same at an early date,"

It was proposed by Mr. Squires and seconded by Mr. Burns " That a list of arrears of subscriptions be produced at next meeting. — Carried.

This concluded ihe business and the Committee adjourned.
