WETHERSTONES SCHOOL.

On Thursday last, at the invitation of the Wetheretones School Committee, we visited their school at its annual examination. On entering, we were at once arrested by the tone and discipline that ruled in both master and mistress' departments. Every child was amenable to ohjer, and answered to every call. The roous were decked in holiday garb. Festoons- from the neighboring gullies, begemmed with the richest stores of the flower gardens, were neatly and gaily arranged. The walls were copiously covered with specimens of writing of good -attainment and fair promise. Mapping, for the first time in the school's history, (and as euch highly creditable) contri- - bated to the productions of the school, and to the ornamentation of the walls. Tn addition to .the ordinary, routine of such occa»oliBj c atid J w^niay addtbiit in every

department the exhibition was satisfactory, the proceedings were varied by several little tournaments, for which special prizes were offered. The first w.is a contest for a prize given by Mr. Isitt forthe best reciter in Mr. Herriot's room, which was awarded to Annie Alexandra, but as Georgina Riddle was considered all but equal ; in fact, there was variety of opinion among the judges, she also received a prize. A similar contest was entered into with spirit in Miss Fowler's room, when the prize was won by John Herd. This, too, was closely run by Alice Tombs, who, if she did not earn the prize, deserves houorable mention. A still more exciting contest was the " Spelling Bee," the prize for which was given by Mr. R. Hunter, and honorably won by a little girl Amelia Smyth. The prizes were distributed by the Rev, J. Menzies, who expressed himself in decided terms as 'o the s«itisfactory state of the school, and also gave a parting word of commendation to Miss Fowler, whose connection with the school, to the regret of all Wetherstones, closed with Thursday's proceedings. When the prizes were distributed, Mr. Kelly then stepped forward and read the following address to Miss Fowler, and made the presentation alluded to in it. We may add that the box is a really handsome article, and we have no doubt will be highly prized by Miss Fowler —

" Wetherstones, .--, s December 21st, 1876. Dear ' Miss Fowler,— On the occasion of your leavbg Wetherstones School to fill the position of Mistress of the Lawrence Grammar School, we take the opportunity of expressing to you the high appreciation we hold of the manner in which you have discharged your duties as Mistress of the School. The children under your tuition have made rapid and satisfactory progress, and you have gained the confidence of their parents. "We beg that you will accept of the accompanying work box as a memento of what we consider the useful term you have served in this school, and wishing you every success in your new sphere of labor. — We remain, dear Miss Fowler, yours truly," [Here follow the names of the Committee J Mr. Herriot, at the request of Miss Fowler, responded in suitable terms, and with his usual modesty called upon the scholars to make up for his deficiency in speaking by according three cheers for Miss Fowler. The proceedings closed by the hymn, sung to the air of the Queen's Anthem, " Glory to God on high," which, as well as the other pieces sung, was well rendered.
