DRAY ROAD TO TAPANUL

The following petition to the Superintendent an 4 Provincial Council for a dray toad to Tapanui over the Blue Mountains is being circulated for signature :—: — To His Honor James Macandrew, Esq., Superintendent and the Executive Council of the Province of Otago. A Memorial from the settlers ami inhabitants of the Crookston District, Beaumont. The undersigned inhabitants of the Crookston district humbly memorahse your Honor concerning the formation of a dray road to Tapanui across the Blue Mountain ran^e, along the line already partly surveyed, branching off from the high road leading to the Teviot, Dunstan, and the Lakes, about one and a half miles from Beanmoiit Ferry. That the construction of such dray road would materially shorten the distinuo between Tapanui, the Beaumont, a*»l Lawrence, thereby facilitating the common ■ cation between these localities —the two latser of which almost entirely depend upon the former for their supply of timber for building purposes. That the above named road would open up a vast area of tine land most valuable for agricultural purposes, situated oa the flit beyond the Blue Mountain range, and at present lying unoccupied. That such road would, if prolonged, in future facilitate in a great degree the couirnunication with Switzers, oue of the lnose important mining discricts, of the province. That, therefore, the undersigned meiiiorialists humbly request you to take iato con • sideration the above mentioned points, aua to cauae su h. euiu to be placed upon t"_i estimates as may be found expedient by Government, say tIOOO, or thereabouts, for the formation of such road, It seems to us that the petition asks for too much. If the inhabioiats of Tapanui will urge the Government to expend some money upon th<» present road to Tapanui, an-1 get the Bine Mountain road made a little more suitable as a bridle track, we think every purpose would be served for soui** time to come.
