LAWRENCE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The Lawrence School Committee held its monthly meeting on Friday last. There were present the Rev. Dr. Copland, President, and Messrs. Jamison, Harrop, W. Hayes, Secretary, Mr Stenhouse, Rector, and the Rev. J. Menzies. After considerable discussion, the minutes were confirmed. ' The only correspondence was a letter from Mr. Hislop enclosing a cheque for L 3 9s. for poor fees. The following accounts were passed for payment : — R. Fowler, LI 14s ; A. Humphrey, L 2 2s ; E. Fowler, L 6 ; T. Barnett, L 5 Is 9d. The Secretary then read a statement of the present position of the school financially, which showed the sum of L 46 Is 4d in favour of the school, On the motion of Mr. Harrop, it was agreed that the balance sheet and money in hand be handed over to Mr. Hayes and s^r. Jamison, and it was decided that the teachers' salaries be paid by them at the end of the quarter. Mr. Stenhouse handed to the Chairman a list of school fees in arrear, amounting to L 66. The most part of that sum was considered good, and the Secretary was instructed to make arrangements with those parents who pleaded poverty as the fiaeans of their childrena' fees not being paid. On the motion of Mr. Harrop, it was agreed to place on the minutes a copy of Mr. Hislop's letter informing the Committee that Scholarships can be competed for at the Lawrence Grammar School. The Rev. Mr. Menzies then read his report on the examination of the scholars. This report created considerable discourse, owing to the results of the examination not being shown. Mr. Menzies, while testifying to the general advancement of the children and the progress observable since the annual examination, could not place the restilts before the Committee as the papers were all in the hands of Mr. E. Herbert. Mr. Menzies whs then deputed by the Committee to see Mr. Herbert with reference to the papers, and get the examination completed. Several recommendations were made by the Visiting Committee and by the Rector, regarding the school and ground, which received the favourable consideration of the Committee. A conversation took place about the Sabbath school held in the schoolroom. Tt was thought by two or three of the members present that the Sabbath school should be removed as the < "hurch of England had now been opened. Mr. Menzies suggested that the consideration of this subject bo held over till next meeting, as the members of Committee who belonged to the Church of England might then be present. Mr. Harrop was deputed to enquire of the Town Council what their intention was with reference to the gold medal prize. Whether they purposed giving similar prizes at the next annual examination.
