NO PREFERENCE.

Status of Ex-Imperial Soldiers. STATEMENTS DENIED. “I wish to give the He direct to the statement that has been made that preference has been given by the General Assistance Committee to former Imperial soldiers at the expense of colonial soldiers,” stated Mr W. H. Darby, last evening, speaking at the meeting of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association. He said that his attention had been called to a statement made by a colonial soldier that all the members of the General Assistance Committee were “pommies” and were giving preference to “pommies” to the exclusion of New Zealand men. “I say that the colonial soldier concerned should be ashamed of himself,” said Mr Darby. “I have figures which are coming in handy to show that we, as a committee, in no circumstances, take into consideration whether a man is a former New Zealand or Imperial soldier. Every case is treated on its merits.” On June 21, 166 applications were dealt with, 127 from New Zealanders, 36 from Imperial men and three from Australians. Only two applications were declined, both of them from New Zealanders. On June 15, 205 applications were considered. Of them 145 were from New Zealanders, 43 from Imperial men, and 17 were declined. On May 31, 175 cases were dealt with, of them 133 from New Zealanders. 2S from Imperial men and three from Australians and Canadians. Fifteen only were declined. “It seems to me,” added Mr Darby “that the time has come when disciplinary action should be taken against those responsible for statements of this sort.” Messrs B. O. Priddis and A. L. Emerson supported Mr Darby.
