University Students Who Fought Duel. United Press Assn.—By Telegraph— Copyright. (Received June 25. 11.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Dav. The two students who fought a duel were fined £1 each by the Vice-Chancel-lor for a breach of the regulations governing the conduct of students. A cable message last week stated that to avenge his honour after he had been expelled from the Melbourne University Conservative Club, Stanislaus Josef von Ingwersen, a descendant of a noble Danish family, fought a duel with Peter Lalor, great-grandson of the Eureka Stockade hero. Lalor moved the motion for Ingwerse'J s expulsion. Ingwersen regarded this as a stain upon his honour and c-iallenged Lalor to a duel with foils. Clad in cloaks and accompanied by seconds, an umpire and a surgeon, the duellists fought until Lalor stumbled and Ingwersen’s foil gashed his ear. The contestants then shook hands and retired to drink coffee. At the time the registrar, Mr J. P. Bainbridge. stated that no official notice w r ould be taken of the affair, which was regarded as a joke.
