Two Men Accused by Police of Receiving. MURDER OF CARETAKER. United Press Assn.—By Telegraph— Copyright. (Received June 25, 11.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Matthew Walsh, 23 years of age, and Keith Gill, 21 years, appeared in the City Court charged with vagrancy. The police prosecutor said that the caretaker of a jewellery firm in Western Australia was murdered and jewellery valued at £4927 was stolen. The police had satisfactory proof that Walsh and Gill had been receiving jewellery. The Magistrate granted the police application for a remand. On the night of February 5 last the body of Edgar Whitfield, 60 years of age. a night caretaker employed by Caris Bros., jewellers, in Hay Street, Perth, was found at the rear of the shop. His neck was broken. Diamonds valued at between £4OOO and £SOOO were missing from the safe. Mr Whitfield was seen about ten o’clock ‘ransferring diamonds from the window to the safe in accordance with his lsual custom. Later, the police received a telephone message from an unknown man saying that he had heard a crash of glass within the shop. Their examination revealed Mr Whitfield’s bosJy. There was evidence of theft ai }d the police are of opinion that Whitfield’s neck was broken during a violent struggle with' burglars.
