“ BRIGHTEYES.”

Shirley Temple Featured at State. Lovable Shirley Temple is starred in Brighteyes,” the entertaining comedydrama which is new in the second week of its successful season at the State Theatre. An attractive child ;s one thing and a good actress is another, but young Shirley is both. Many .1 grown-up could take points from the spontaneous manner in which she works. There are tears here and there. But they are happy tears and all the way through comedy bubbles. Shirlev is the daughter of an aviator who was killed in a smash-up, and is the idol of her father’s aviator friends. Her special chum is James Dunn, whose as the adoring godfather leaves nothing to be desired, and he gives a particularly happy interpretation in the sequences where he and the child “ play together.” Humanity is’ the keynote of the picture and the scenes are arranged with taste and skill. Apart from the amusing contributions of the small Shirley herself, a great deal of the humour is supplied by Uncle Ned, a cross, livery old man, who never stirs from his wheel chair and who gives his objectionable relations a lively time. Uncle Ned has a lot of money and the relations are well on their way to receiving a good share. Then Unclfc Ned’s sharp old eyes alight upon Shirley, and he has the time of h:s life acting as her champion. The supporting programme is good.
