COMMEMORATION DAY.
Celebration at St Bede’s College. Commemoration Day was celebrated at St Bede’s College j r esterday, when a large number of old boys and friends of the college joined the pupils in honouring the patron saint of the college. In the morning Pontifical High Mass was celebrated by his Lordship Bishop Brodie in the college chapel. An address was given by the Bishop, in which he cited the life of the Venerable Bede as an example of scholarship and piety which all should strive to emulate. The main Commemoration Day celebration was in the afternoon, when the address was given by the Rev Father D. H. Hurley, Provincial of the Society of Mary. The Rector, the Rev Father A. Burger, S.M., presided and also on the platform was his Lordship, Bishop Brodie. A number of members of the clergy, and many old boys, parents and friends of the college were present. The Rector in referring to the day being the 12th centenary of the death of St Bede, the Venerable, said that the college needed not only a patron in Heaven, but also on this earth. Were it not for the poverty of the teaching orders he was afraid the Roman Catholic system o'f education would break down. The work of the college needed continued support, and in that field of activity he asked the assistance of the Roman Catholic community. Bishop Brodie also spoke, expressing his faith in the cause of Roman Catholic education. The boys’ address was read by K. Purcell, one of the prefects, and the list of benefactors of the college by F. Cullen. At the conclusion Benediction was given in the chapel.
