Officials Appointed for Boxing Tourney. SATUR"DAY NIGHT'S FIXTURE. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON. May 27. The following officials have been appointed for the boxing tournament to be held next Saturday night: Referees, Messrs H, P. Johnston and 11. Dillon, judges, Messrs J. B. Cullen, H. R. C-. McElrea. J. H. Grigg, A. N. Grigg and J. D. Murdoch; announcer, Mr F. Por ter; timekeepers. Messrs F. B. Robilliard and C. B. Gass;; competitors and doctors’ stewards. Messrs G. Brown, H Rainey and G. Nutbrown; glove stew ! ard, Mr J W. Smith; house stewards. Messrs M. Keeley, 11. Rainey and G. i Nutbrown: official seconds, Messrs C. Stock, C. Shearman and D. Several leading boxers from Grey mouth will take part and arrangements have been made for the entertainment of the visitors at a smoke concert after the tournament. Motor cycle Club, The Ashburton Motor-cycle Club held its final run of the season to Mr H. Brown’s farm at Seaview on Sunday. S. Watson and R. Chalmers, with 176 points each, tied for the Preddv Cup, which is awarded for the most points obtained by a private owner throughout the season. The Speedwell Cup, for open competition, was won by S. The Band of the Jubilee Institute for the Blind in Auckland will pay a visit to Ashburton on October 21. Arrangements for the visit are being made by the Ashburton District i Women’s Institute, the Ashburton branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, and the Ashburton Silver Band, and hospitality for the 20 voung men and boys in the band will be provided by members of these two women’s organisations. Formed in 1627, the band has proved a most efficient one, and under the con ductorship of Lieutenant G. W. Bowes maintains a high musical standard. Lieutenant Bowes, one-time conductor of the Wellington Tramways Band, was band sergeant in the Bth Hussars. Personal. Miss M. T. Lambie (director of the Division of Nursing, Department of Health), paid a visit to the Ashburton Public Hospital on Saturday. She expressed appreciation of the provision of o sunroom for patients of Chalmers Ward. Mr J. Retteridge. who has been on the clerical staff of the Ashburton Public Hospital for the past three years, has accepted an appointment on the Palmerston North Hospital Board and will leave Ashburton next month. Mr W J. Sparrow has left Ashburton on a three months’ health recruiting holiday in Fiji and Samoa, Meeting of Borough Council. (Special to the * , Star.”) ASHBURTON, May 27. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presiding. There were also present Councillors J. Thompson, F. J. K. tfmallbone, J. Shaw, S. Mitchell, J. T. Fratley, H. 11. C. Mcßlrea, W/H. Robinson, E. H. Orr, R. Kerr and Dr J. Connor. A letter signed by six taxi proprietors of Ashburton alleged that a considerable amount of “private” taxt-ing was being done in Ashburton. The council was asked to make every endeavour to put a stop to this type of law-break-ing. The writers stated that quite recently a garage proprietor had made a charge for taking a party of basket-ball players to Rokeby for the afternoon, at about a quarter of what the taxi tare would have been. Before taking any action It was decided to ask for more definite information. The Ashburton Sports Association recommended to the council that the Ashburton Rugby Union be granted a closed day on the oval for the representative fixture against Canterbury on June 3. The recommendation was granted on the usual terms. With regard to the negotiations between the council and the Justice Department for the exchange of the present Courthouse site for half an acre of land on the left of the Council Chambers, fronting Cameron Street and Baring Square West, the Minister of Justice (the Hon J. O. Cobbe) wrote to the council stating that the Government was prepared to proceed with the exchange of sites as soon as the council had completed arrangements for the payment of the difference between valuations of the two sites, so that a new building may be erected. It was stated that the exchange would cost the council £3500. The Government would retain the old Court buildings for removal and these would not be vacated until the new buildings were erected.
