Decision to Revert to Fortnightly Meetings. The first meeting of the new Christchurch City Council was held last night, when the Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.) presided. There were also prosent: Councillors J. W. Beanland, W. S. Mac Gibbon. E. H. Andrews, F. D. Sargent, T. Andrews. J. Guthrie, T„ :*illiken, A. C. Sandston, W. Hayward, G. Jamieson, M. E. Lyons, J. S. Barnett. E. Parian 3, T. H. Butterfield and J. K. Archer. It was decided to hold the next meeting in three weeks’ time, and then to revert, for a time, to fortnightly meetings. A series of motions moved by Dr IT. T. J. Thacker at the final meeting of the last council was brought before the meeting and dealt with as follows: “That it be a recommendation to the incoming council to make it its first urgent duty to find real standard wage paid work for our citizens.”—Referred to Finance Committee. “To at once urge the Acting Prime Minister to take steps to complete the South Island Main Trunk line and highway—to ask him to get the Prime Minister in England to secure a British contract and British capital to complete the fifty-mile gap with sterling at 3 per cent, asking to be constructively used.” —Referred to the By-laws Committee. “The urgent paving of the mail route highway to Akaroa that is now in greater part a dangerous gravel riverbed—a highway scandal; an urgent duty on our Highway and Unemnlo.vment Boards to at once tackle and amend.” — Referred to the conference of local body An invitation from the Mayor to attend a service at the Roman Catholic Cathedral on June 9 was accepted.
