The Great Dianthus Family.
A Garden Corner
AIENTION Dianthus seems to bring most vividly to mind the Indian pink branch, just why one cannot say. There are sections in the very large family of more importance. It may be said that there are four leading sections which give us the best species and are most often seen in our gardens. Dianthus barbatus is the Sweet William and the parent of the modern hvbrid, Sweet Wivelsfield. D. caryophyllus covers the handsome carnation family with its inexhaustible possibilities in Show Chaubaud, Picotee and Perpetual. D. chinensis is the well known pink from India and Japan, the Dianthus heddewigi of the florist. D. plumarius includes the garden pinks so favoured for their sweet smell and prolific beauty. These do not include many of the choice rock garden Dianthus or Cheddar pinks which may be classified as small flowered forms, invaluable but not so distinctive.' T. D. LENNIE.
