AN UNUSUAL CASE.
Charge of Defacing Road Sign Dismissed. t*er Pres« Association. HAMILTON. Mav 27 An unusual case was heard in the Magistrates Court to-day. when the Automobile Association prosecuted Hugh Alfred Yercoe. a stock agent, of Hamilton, for alleged wanton defacement of a signpost. Evidence for the prosecution showed that defendant admitted defacing the signpost on Trafford’s Hill, between Opotiki and Gisborne, some eighteen month* ago, but denied writing on the signpost re-erected in that locality J later. Handwriting experts stated that in their opinion the writing on both boards was done by the same person. Defendant definitely denied defacing the second board, but admitted resigning from the association after damage was done to the first board. The Magistrate remarked that although he believed defendant responsible. he could not convict on the similarity of handwriting alone. The case was accordingly dismissed.
