RICCARTON RATES.
- “We are making every effort to reduce our rate, but unfortunately some of the other local bodies such as the Drainage Board are increasing their rates. I don’t know how the Hospital Board will get on,” declared the Mavor of Riccarton (Mr 11. S. S. Kyle. M.P.), when the estimates for the year ending March 31, 1936, were before the meeting of the council last night. The council’s general rate of 2'd in I the £ on an unimproved value of £390,497, to be levied for the financial year ending March 31, 1936, is oneeighth of a penny less than last year’s. The general rate is estimated to realise £2068, compared with £4270 last year, when the rate was 2gd in the £. The annual estimates were approved by the Council at its meeting last night. The proposed expenditure was set down at £7301, made up as follows: General administration £934, miscellaneous £B7l, Public Works £549G. The l estimated receipts included the credit balance from last year of £826, licenses, refunds, etc., £2407, and the balance through the general rate. The gradual reduction of the general rate was shown as follows: 1929-30, 31 d ; 1930-31, 3}d ; 1931-32, 3£d ; 1932-33, 2£d; 1933-34, 23d; 1934-35, 2|d--1935-36, 21 d.
