Four Years’ Gaol Term Imposed. In the Supreme Court this morning Ernest John Stokes was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment with hard labour on a charge of incest. Pleading on Stokes’s behalf, Air Lester said that the prisoner had been more foolish than criminal. He had actually thought that in one way he was acting for the best. He took no advantage of a technical defence that was open to him. ” This is a very serious crime,” said Air Justice Johnston, “ one which the legislature regards so seriously that it is never allowed to pass without severe penalty.
