FIRE ENGINEERS.

Annual Conference Opens in City. The annual conference of the New Zealand branch of the Institute of Fire Engineers of Great Britain opened in Christchurch this morning, delegates attending from all parts of the Dominion. After the delegates had been welcomed by Mr T. M. Charters, chairman of the Christchurch Fire Board. Superintendent C. C. Warner, of the Christchurch Fire Brigade, the retiring president, installed Superintendent W. H. Barnard (Palmerston North) as the new president. In his valedictory address, Mr Warner drew attention to the fact that the branch continued to prosper. He congratulated successful candidates in the institute’s examinations. In his presidential address, Mr Barnard said that the branch was in a flourishing condition. It was pleasing to notice that fire boards were recognising the diploma of the institute by giving slight increases in pay to holders. It was also pleasing to note that in the last examinations a New Zealander headed the list for overseas candidates. Ofllcsrs Elsctsd. Officers were elected as follows: President. Superintendent W. H.
