The New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade received a call at 3 p.m. on Saturday to a scrub fire which had broken out in some sections on the north-east side of Marriott’s Road between Osborne Terrace and Jubilee Avenue. The brigade experienced nt difficulty is subduing the fire, which was extinguished with the first-aid apparatus. The trophy, which has been contested by the Christchurch and Timaru branches of the R.S.A. in the first annual match for the Timaru “ Bomb ” Bowl, is a novelty in the way of prizes, taking the form of a “ dud ” Mills bomb, resting on a bowl, the whole being mounted on a polished wooden block. The cost of the trophy, which was made by Mr T. Marter, of the R.S.A., was defrayed by contributions from members of the association.
