Swimming Heats Decided at Auckland. MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. Per Press Association AUCKLAND. February 15 Heats of the mile men’s swimming championship of New Zealand decided to-nights were marked by victory in the first heat of J. Neville, a Taranaki swimmer, previously unknown outside his own centre. His time was 23min 56 1-5 sec, and this was equalled by the winner of the second heat. W. Johnson (Auckland*,. Results are:— First Heat—J. Neville (Taranaki) 1, .T. Watkins (Hawke’s Ba.y) 2. N. Crump (Auckland) 3. Watkins took the lead just after the start, and maintaining a smooth stroke increased his advantage to ten yards at the half distance. Watkins and Crump decreased his lead over the remainder of the distance, but when they were only a yard behind him and sixty yards remained Crump suddenly fell back. In an exciting finish Neville won by a yard, Watkins defeating Crump by ten yards. Time—23min 56 l-ssec. Second Heat—W. Johnson (Auckland) 1. J. O’Driscoll (Otago) 2. C. Buchanan (Auckland) 3.
