THE RED CROSS.

Annual Street Appeal Made To-day. A good response was made to-day by the public of Christchurch to the annual street appeal of the Red Cross Society, and at one o’clock £175 had been collected. Two hundred cjllectors, working in shifts, were on the streets before eight o’clock, and early in the morning the distinctive red badges issued to contributors were everywhere in evidence. The object of the collection is t*2 enable the society to provide warm winter clothing and other comforts for necessitous families of returned soldiers. Tn past years there has been an excellent response, and there was every indication to-day that last year’s figure would be exceeded by a considerable margin. Lady Wigram. chairman of the women’s executive of the society, is in charge of arrangements. The collection will be continued until seven o’clock to-night. The organiser is Mrs IT. Wyatt, who is assisted at the headquarters of the society in Worcester Street, near Manchester Street, by Mrs C. Stringer, Mrs A. Macpherson and Mr R. M. Grant. The treasurer is Mrs Herbert Smith, who is assisted by Mrs E. S. Vernon, Mrs E. Peate and Mrs H. L. Bowker. In addition to the appeal two stalls in Victoria Sauare, under the charge of Mrs T. L. Vernon, Mrs Benzies, Mr P. R. Climie and Mrs J. E. K. Brown, did excellent business with a variety of goods. One stall was devoted to cakes and sweets and the other to the miscellany of articles which supporters and members of the society donated. Corners were manned during the iav bv the Opawa, Merivale, Sydenham, Riccarton and New Brighton '-übbranches of the society and the Navy League, with the co-operation of other organisations. The Mayoress. Mrs D. G. Sullivan, and the wife of the Town Clerk. Mrs T- S. Neville, provided tea for the collectors and helpers in the collection at the City Council Chambers.
