DESTITUTE FAMILY.

Particulars of Case Sent to Prime Minister. Recently the Prime Minister, the Rt Hon G. W. Forbes, asked for specific cases of dire necessity in Christchurch. Mr A. E. Armstrong has written to Mr Forbes, giving particulars of the case of a family which is threatened with eviction. There are four children, two of whom are suffering from chronic ailments. The house has no conveniences and is in a bad state of repair. Mr Armstrong asks for aid for this family.

He has also sent the following telegram to Mr Forbes: ** One of the greatest difficulties confronting the unemployed of this city is to acquire proper accommodation for their families. The remuneration received on relief works does not provide in many cases sufficient food, to say nothing of rent or interest and principal on money borrowed. The result is that eviction and orders to vacate property are being served on destitute people every week, with the result that those persons with the largest number of dependents, who should, in the interests of the country, be housed in the most hygienic and up-to-date homes, are forced eventually into shacks and. hovels that are decidedly not fit for human habitation. As president of the Canterbury Unemployed Workers’ Association I would be pleased to learn that the Government has some immediate. proposals to alleviate the present plight of the citizens concerned.”
