Fate of Dam in Avon to Be Considered. FURTHER EXPERIMENT. The fate of the temporary dam in the Avon at Armagh Street bridge will be determined next week, when the .natter will come before a meeting of the Drainage Board. It is expected that the board will agree to a proposal to lower the dam by one foot and leave it at that for a month, so that the effect on the appearance of the river and the natural drainage of the district can be gauged. If it is found that the level of the water remains too high to meet the requirements of the district, it is likely that the dam will be lowered another sixteen inches, thus bringing it to the level permitted by the legislation covering the river. At the present time the dam is 2ft Ain above the legal level, but it is possible that consideration will be given 1o the possibility of getting an amendment to the existing legislation with the object of building, where necessary, dams of a greater height than is now permitted. It is understood that the results of raising the level of the water in this part of the river are considered by a majority of members of the Drainage Board" to be an improvement on the previous conditions. It is felt, however, that the present appearance of the stretch be maintained, even with a reduction in the height of the water, fears having been expressed of the danger of drowning accidents hap pening in the deep holes.
