Ashburton district primary school committees strongly resented the action of the authorities in closing the schools in the afternoons without first giving them official intimation. At a meeting yesterday of the chairman of the Ashburton Borough (Dr J. Connor), Ashburton East (Mr W. S. Kerr) and Allenton (Mr E. C. Bathurst) Schools, the opinion was expressed that the chairmen should have been given power to use their discretion so that the schools would not close on afternoons when the temperature was reasonably cool. It was stated that there had been only one very hot day in Ashburton since the closing came into operation. It was agreed to forward an Expression of the views of the committees to the Education Board.
