NEW CAPTAIN.
Otago’s Plunket Shield Team. MATCH AGAINST CANTERBURY. (Special to the “ Star.’*) DUNEDIN, This Day. There have been several changes in the Otago team to meet Canterbury compared with that which met Auckland some time ago, but the most notable difference is that Cavanagh will captain the side in place of the professional coach, F. T. Badcock, whose captaincy met with much criticism in the Auckland match. Cavanagh has had good experience in Shield cricket. He has captained the Dunedin Club and has shown promise in that direction and, having regard to the future, his appointment is a wise one. Leader, Clark and Smith have been dropped from the team, Smith now being twelfth man. The newcomers are the ex-New Zealand representative, Talbot, who has shown a return to form and played a fine knock against Southland last week. F. Kerr (an exWaitaki High School boy) who plays for Carisbrook, is one of the most promising young cricketers Otago has had in years. He put together 87 for North Otago against the Otago colts at Christmas and made another fine tally against Southland for Otago last week. Toomey, who replaces Clark as wicketkeeper, plays for Christian Brothers, and besides being a very fair wicketkeeper is a solid opening bat for his club. The team will now be: Badcock, Cavanagh (captain), Chettleburgh, Dickinson, Elmes, Dunning, Kerr, Saxton, Talbot, Toomey and Uttley. The match will commence on February ? 22. West Coast Team.
