UNFORTUNATE CAREER.
Accused Man Has Ability, Says Judge. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, This Day. A jury in the Supreme Court yesterday found Reginald I lowan guilty on two charges of procuring’ money to be paid to the organising brokers of New Zealand, Ltd., by false pretences and also on a charge of theft. The jury added a recommendation to mercy “ because of the lax business methods of the chairman of the company.” The accused was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment with hard labour on each of the charges by the Chief Justice, the sentences to be concurrent.
The Judge said it was unfortunate that the accused had adopted such a career, because his appearance and method of making his statement, and also what had happened, showed that he was a man of considerable ability and that if he were prepared to live honestly he might do well for himself.
