WHEN DEATH WON.
Extraordinary Story F rom Monte Carlo. LONDON, January 9. The Monte Carlo correspondent of the “News-Chronicle ” says that an Englishman plunging at the gaming tables was consistently unlucky until he had lost £2OOO, whereupon he placed his last counter on No. 28 and buried his head in his hands. Twenty-eight, won. The man ignored the winnings which the croupier pushed towards him. representing thirty-five times the original stake. The lucky counter remained on 28, which won again, resulting in the recovery of £IOOO of his losses. Still the man did not respond to the croupier’s touch. A woman in an adjacent seat petulantly asked him not to lean against her. He did not reply, and she rose to her feet, upon which he rolled to the floor dead.
