AMATEUR CYCLING.

Programme for Canterbury Championships. ATHLETIC EVENTS LIKELY. The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association met last evening, Mr C. D. Doyle presidin?t was decided to hold the Canterbury championships at Timaru on Saturday, February 1«. The following events were agreed upon:— Thousand metres time trial, one nine, three mile.-, live u§iles and ten miles; and a 1000 metres time trial for juniors. The open time trial was substituted for the half mile, 'and the junior trial will replace the mile championship. It was decided that junior riders should be allowed to compete in open championships. The possibility of athletic events being introduced was discussed, and it was decided to approach the Timaru Athletic Club on the subject, and also to see whether local athletes would make the trip. The Otago Cycling Centre is to be notified of the meeting, in the hope that Otago cyclists will comP Vhe chairman congratulated Mr G. R. Giles on his success at North Island meetings recently. The application of S. Broad for reinstatement was referred to the Reinstatement Committee. Missing- Cup. R. C. Day wrote asking that the B Grade Cup, which he had won, should be forwarded to him. The chairman said that the cup had been mislaid, and Mr C. Hamilton, a former member of the centre, who had it in his possession, could not remember what had happened to it. A member suggested that Mr Hamilton should replace the cup. The secretary was instructed to buy a cup for Day, and it was decided to make further .enquiries about the missing trophy. The Rangiora Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club advised that, at a meeting on December 18, a separate committee and officers had been elected to control cycling. This action bad been taken by active cyclist members. The letter was received. F\ J. Grose was given permission to ride at an evening meeting at Wellingtpn on Saturday next. Trial Meetings. Two trial meetings over Olympic distances will he held to select the five riders to represent Canterbury at the New Zealand championships, according to a decision of the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association, at a meeting last evening. The meetings will be held at Hal swell on January 26, and at Papanui on FebThe question was raised by Mr H. G. Kilpatrick, who said that as the championships were to be run over Olympic Games distances, it would be advisable for Canterbury cyclists to become accustomed to the distances. He suggested that races should be held over 1000 yards, a 1000 metres time trial (human-paced) and five miles. This programme was agreed upon for the first meeting, at Halswell. On the suggestion of Mr G. R. Giles, the programme for the Papanui meeting was fixed at a 1000 >ards, a 1000 metres time trial and a ten-mile race. It was agreed that not more than three f riders should start in the heats of the shorter events. A selection committee was elected as follows: Messrs C. l\ Doyle. H. G. Kilpatrick, J. Blick and R. Hill. Both meetings will start at 2.30 p.m.
