ICE CREAM RECORD.
Thirty Tons Disappeared Over Holidays. THE CITY'S PERFORMANCE. Something like a miniature iceberg must have disappeared down Christchurch throats during the holidays, for nearly thirty tone of ice cream were consumed in the past fortnight. As warm citizens became warmer, ice cream manufacturers worked harder and smiled happily as they talked of increased business. Over 14,000 gallons of ice cream were sold in Christchxirch during the period, and both the big manufacturing firms report the best season since they started. One firm reported better business bv 600 per cent, and another was well ahead of past turnover. Christchurch was by no means unique in the matter of ice cream eating, for the whole of the Dominion has been in the clutches of the heat wave, and in all the cities manufacturers are talking brightly of 200 and 300 per cent increases in the quantity of their product. The volume of milk and cream used has been tremendous. One firm, which rushed out several tons of ice cream on Christmas Dav and Boxing Dav, mixed up over 2500 gallons of milk and cream to assist in 1 eeping Christchurch cool over the two-weekly stretch. , The manager of one firm, in a happy review of his trade, emphasised the value to the farmer as far as butterfat was concerned of the city’s passion for ice cream. He said that the holidav period must have made a vast difference in the consumption of butterfat. That would apply not only in Christchurch but all through the Dominion. for the heat wav- had spared no part of the country. Illustrating his remarks he declared that he had received a letter a Dunedin manufacturer, in which it was stated that the business in ice cream had increased by fully 200 per cent in the southern city.
