Defended Cases Heard 1n Supreme Court. ALLEGATIOXS BY “'IFE. Divorce on the grounds of separation was sought in a defended Supreme Court action this morning by \Yilliam M’Quinn, of Christchurch, a railwayman (Mr Young), from Margaret \‘iolet M'Quinn, of Christchurch (Dr Ilaslain). The petition stated that the parties were married on November 22, 1917, at Christchurch. There were two children of the marriage. In September. 1931, the parties agreed to separate and had remained apart from that date. Petitioner asked for custody of the chil» dren. Mr Justice Johnston presided. Mr Young said that the respondent would contend that separation had been brought about by wrongful actions on the part of petitioner. This was denied by petitioner. Dr Haslam said that since the parties had lived together from 1920. petitioner had had periodical outbursts of drunkenness and violence,‘ with threats to his wife. On one occasion he had turned his wife and her sister out of the house. He had threatened her with a knife and had bullied her. but remarked that he knew S too much to marl: her." One of the children, continued counsel, was mentally defective and deformed as a result of the worry caused to its mother. Respondent was opposing the divorce. added counsel, because her husband had said he was going to remarry if he got a divorce. On his small wages she was afraid that he could not support her and her children in this event.
