NARROW ESCAPE.
Due to Pilot’s Skilful Handling. AEROPLANE IN DITCH. Per Press Association. PALMERSTON N., December 10. Skilful piloting alone prevented an accident at Milson Aerodrome this afternoon. The machine was piloted by Mr L. Whiteman, of London, with, as passenger, Mr Gordon Johnston, of Palmerston North. During the landing, the 'plane taxied into a ditch of which the pilot was unaware till he felt the machine going into it. He immediately opened the throttle and the plane rose, but the under-carriage struck the bank on the other side and collapsed. Mr Whiteman thus faced the unenviable task of making a second landing with the under-carriage swinging. He came down slowly, flattened out and skidded the machine along the turf. The propeller broke as the blade struck the ground in the course of its revolutions. The only other damage was where the under-carriage hit the fuselage during the second landing.
