DEFECTIVE BRAKES.
Horse-float Driver Fined £5 and Costs. Per Press Association. TEMUKA, This Day. A case of interest to horse-float drivers was heard this morning before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., in which Isaac G. Watkins, of Rangiora, was charged with driving a motor vehicle containing horses on October 12 to Timaru races with allegedly defective brakes. Inspector Ashwell prosecuted and Mr A. C. Fraser (Rangiora) appeared for defendant. In evidence, the inspector stated that he drove the vehicle for certain tests near Arundel and found that the brakes, both hand and foot, were defective. Against this, defendant in his version swore that the inspector could not possibly have driven the vehicle from the position he occupied when testing the brakes. The Magistrate accepted Inspector Ash well’s statement, at the same time stating that the conviction would carry with ia a strong suspicion of perjury, as it was one man’s 'evidence against another’s. He strongly deprecated the use of any vehicle which had defective brakes. lie convicted defendant and fined him £5 and costs.
