Subsidy Asked for Sewerage Scheme. (Special to the “ Star.”) ASHBURTON, December 10. The Ashburton Borough Council met last evening, when the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presided. There were also present Councillors W. H. Rundle, F. ]■ E. Smallbone, J. Connor, E. Buchanan. H. R. C. M’Elrea, J. T. Pratley, W. H. Robinson, E. H. Orr and R. Kerr. It was reported that the receipts since the previous meeting had totalled £543 12s 9d, the chief items being: Rates £246 16s Id, rents £4B 2s 3d, abat toir fees £lO 6s 6d, extraordinary water supply £24 6s Id. licenses £SB 2s. Following representations made to the deputy chairman of the Unemployment Board it was decided to apply for a subsidy in connection with the proposed sewerage scheme in Ashbur ton East. It was decided to proceed with the erection of a new steel bell tower for the fire brigade. Personal. Dr W. F. Watters, who has occupied the position of house surgeon at the Ashburton County Hospital for about two years, has resigned and will give up duties on January 21. Dr Zoe Rutherford, who has been a house surgeon for twelve months, has also resigned as from the end of this month. The resignations were accepted at to-day’s meeting of the board, and it was decided to record appreciation of their services. Sister M. Torrens, who has been associated with the staff of the hospital for five years, has accepted an appointment in Wellington and will leave Ashburton at the end of this year.
