PERMANENT WEIRS.
Plan to Raise Level c r Avon.
The Christchurch Beautifying Association has decided to apply to the Minister of Internal Affairs for a share of £IOO in an art union to help it carry on its work. It was stated to the meeting last evening that the association’s funds were at a low ebb and that there was urgent need for more finance. The decision to apply for a share in an art union was reached without discussion, it being stated by the chairman (Mr R. B. Owen) that all their expenditure provided work. Referring to the proposed permanent weirs to raise the level of the water in the Avon, Mr Owen reported that in all probability the plans would be ready inside a few days. Membeif suggested that the temporary weir which w’as to be erected for the river carnival during the Duke’s visit should be made a permanent structure. If the situation of the weir was suitable, it would save money to make it permanent. If it was to be removed afterwards, the money spent on it would be wasted. It was decided to write to the City Council with regard to the matter, and to offer the association’s co-operation if the weir could be made in accordance with the association’s wishes. On the motion of Mr E. L. Hills, it was decided to write to the Christchurch Drainage Board complimenting it on the work already accomplished on the Heathcote River past Radley. but urging that the continuation of the work should be speeded up as much as possible.
