ROWING.
Avon Score in Eight-oar Contest. Eight-oar jnterclub racing was instituted by the Canterbury Rowing Association on Saturday afternoon on the Waimajcariri River at Stewart’s G-uHy* Conditions were ideal, there being practically no wind and a good tide. There was a large attendance. Jn the final Avon beat Union by two lengths. The Avon crew were:- —L. Patterson (str), F. If. Thompson (7). J. 11. Lane (6), A. Thompson (5), G. Wright (4), J, Rushworth <3)' N. Barbour i2). F. Hampton (bowL Avon drew the north bank course for the third time. Both crews got off to a splendid start. When they had settled down there was still no difference between them. A quarter of a mile from the start tjie two crews were rowing thirty-eight strokes to the minute.. Half a mile from home Avon were rowing beautifully and were a dear length in the lead. Union made an effort to reduce the lead, hut Avon, rowing well within themselves, managed to increase their advantage by another half length. Swinging along us one man. Avon gradually increased the lead and passed the post with two lengths to spare.
