ATHLETICS.

Points Scored at Inter-Club Meeting. The outstanding features of the interclub competitions conducted at Lancaster Park South on Saturday by the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association were the fine mile of C. H. Matthews, the Technical distance runner, and a smart 100yds dash by the New Zealand sprints champion, J. B. Macfarlane. For most of the journey Matthews had to make his own pace, and he again showed good judgment in this respect to cut out the distance in the splendid time 6 f 4mm 2 5 4-ssec. This time is Matthews's second best to date, and is 9 l-ssec better than the Canterbury standard. With a following easterly wind. Macfarlane covered the short sprint in 1.0 l-ssee—-the best time returned at any of the meetings this season. G. C. Gordon led over the first 70yds, but (hen Macfarlane, in a great finish, forged to the front t.o win by a dear yard. Gordon finished in second place ahead of C. S. Barrell, who beat the former at the first meeting of the season, and has been a consistent place-getter in recent weeks. Jt was expected that a great tussle for points would develop between the Technical and Varsity Clubs, which had not previously been brought together. but, as events turned out, Technical had an easy win, scoring 115 points to Varsity’s 82 points. The students did not have the services of men who usually perform consistently for them, such as E. R. Hounsell, G. M. Tift'en, A. P, Thompson and A. T. Anderson. The points table is as follows: Section I —Technical 115, Varsity 82, Presbyterian 39, New Brighton 33, Civil Service 13. Kaiapoi 2.
