BIG CLIMBING PARTY.
Will Attempt Virgin Peaks in Godley District. Thirty members of the Wellington Alpine Club intend to visit the Godley district near the Mount Cook area at Christmas time to climb among the many fine peaks in the district. Three of these—lluss (8165 ft), Loughnan (8495 ft) and Victoire (8269ft)—have not yet been climbed, and it is probable that experienced parties will try to secure first ascents. The visitors will have with them Mr A. P. Harper, of Wellington, a member of the Alpine Club, and Mr G. E. Mannering, of Christchurch, both distinguished pioneer mountaineers. They intend to arrive at their camp on December 23 and leave on Tanuarv 2 or 3. The hut, which is now being constructed at the Godley headwaters, will be used as a store by the party. They will not be able to use it for sleeping purposes, as it is not yet finished. Fine weather is hoped for, and in that event much useful work should be accomplished. Several members of the Christchurch Ski Club will travel with the party to seek sport in the region.
