Perry and Hughes Beaten at Sydney. N.S.W. CHAMPIONSHOPS. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—-Copyright. * SYDNEY, November 30. , Surprises continue in the New South Wales tennis championships, to-day’s being the defeat of F. J. Perry and G. 1 Hughes in the doubles. The courts were slow after overnight, rain and a blustery wind made conditions difficult. Results:— MEN’S DOUBLES. Semi-finals: J. B. Crawford and V. M’Grath defeated If. Kirby and Quist, 6-3, 10-12, 6-4, 6-4. H. Hopman and F. Maier defeated *. 1 J. Perry and G. Hughes, 6-8, 3-6. 10-8, 6-3, 6-4. WOMEN'S DOUBLES. Semi-finals: Misses E. S. Dearman and N. M Lyle defeated Misses Joan Hartigau and J. Bickerton, 6-4, 6-0. Miss J>. E. Round and Mrs Hopman defeated Mesdames Westmacott and Molesworth. 6-4. 6-1. MIXED DOUBLES. Semi-finals. Perry and Miss Round defeated Kirby and Miss Lyle, 6-4, 6-4. _ . . Hopman and Mrs Hopman defeated Menzel and Miss Bickerton, 6-4, 6-4. Perry and Hughes, after winning the first and second sets, led ".-3 and 30-0 in the third set. Perry was foot-faulted in this game. His play appeared *o suffer until the end <>f the set, which Hopman and Maier won after a grand fight. The Englishmen’s volleying in the fourth set was ineffective and so they resorted to tossing, but Hnpman’s and Maier’s volleying and smashing was irresistible.
