STILL THE BEST.
Flying Scotsman Sets Up New Record. 386 MILES IN 21ir 31min. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received December 1, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, November 30. The Flying Scotsman established a British railway record travelling irom King’s Cross to Leeds, 186 miles, in 2hr 31min, at an average speed of 75 miles an hour and a maximum of 944 miles an hour. During the return journey the train attained 97i miles an hour, Britain’s greatest passenger train speed. The trip was undertaken to test the steam train against the Dieselengined Hamburg Flyer, which did a trip of 178 miles to Berlin in 2.hr ISmin. The London and North Eastern officials claim that the trip proved that the steam engine beat the German oil-burner, considering that the latter’s run took place on a flat track, while the London-Leeds line has gradients of up to one in 100, with severe speed restrictions in some places.
