TROTTING DERBY TO GAMBLE.

Leaves* The Field to Win by Six Lengths From Subsidy. WORTHY LIGHT WINS COURTENAY. OTRIDING OUT from the rest of the field in the run home, . Gamble, first favourite, romped home an easy winner by six lengths in the New Zealand Trotting Derby. The second lavourite. Subsidy, was second, and there was another big gap of three lengths to the third horse. Drag Harlan. Gamble covered the distance in 3min 19 4-ssec. The public received a disappointment in the Courtenay Handicap. The favourite, Silver de Oro, appeared to have the race won fifty yards from the post, but broke and was beaten into third place. The race was won by the third favourite, Worthy Light, with the eighth favourite, Sir Guy, second.

Glorious sunny weather favoured the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club for the second day of its spring meeting at Addington to-day. There was a large attendance and the track was in excellent order, making for fast times. The favourite, Teviot Downs, was' well beaten by the third choice. Sea Gift, in the Whiteleigh Handicap, the first event of the day. New Metford was third. mile post. At this stage Gamble left his field and went on to win .by six lengths from Subsidy who beat Drag Harlan by three lengths for second money. The coupled horses. Gamble and Boltaire, were favourites with £IOSB. Subsidv was second choice with £599. Courtenay Handicap. The Courtenay Handicap was responsible for a sensational finish. Silver d’Oro got a lucky run two and a half furlongs from home and went from third to first on the inside of her opponents. She was closely followed into the straight by Sunny Morn, Harvest Child, Sir Guj- and Worthy Light. Silver d'Oro held her position until within fifty yards of the winning post, where she broke badly when appearing to have the race in safe keeping. The mistake stopped several horses that were following her and Worthy Light flashed up on the outside to win by a length from Sir Guy, who beat Silver d’Oro by a similar margin. Wrecker, then Silver d'Oro, then Gold Tinge assumed the lead and the last-named led for a mile and five furlongs, with Sunny Morn, Silver d’Oro and Kingcraft right in behind her. At this stage Silver d’Oro shot through to the front and the race ended as described. Silver d’Oro was favourite with £989. Worthy Light carried £429. Sir Guy was entrusted with £214. Ellesmere Handicap. Tempest was a very hot favourite for the Ellesmere Handicap. He was entrusted with £lll4, while Sure, the second choice, carried £363. Taxpayer and Linel’a failed to go away, while Roddy turned round the wrong way. Tempest waited on the leaders in the final round until the straight was reached. He then shot ahead and won by four lengths from Muriel d’Oro, who beat Morning Sun by a neck for second, while Taxpayer was fourth. Nelson de Oro was the early leader from Colonial Boy. Purser had charge with three furlongs to go and led round the home turn from Colonial Boy, Tempest, Eureka Boy (who broke), Nelson de Oro and Muriel d’Oro. Notes From the Course. Sea Gift made a break at the end of the first furlong and won the WhiteJeigh Handicap by a length from Teviot Downs, who was beaten on his merits. With the exception of Explosion. all got away well, with Teviot Downs in charge and Cannonball. King’s Voyage. Sea Gift. Don Chenault. New Metford and Fifa following in that order Racing through the straight the field closed up. Teviot Downs still ring in charge, with Cannonball, Sea (Gift, King's Vovage, New Metford, Fifa and Nell Volo all racing in close formation. On reaching the mile post. Sea Gift ran up to Teviot Downs and the pair led into the straight, with New Metf°rd, Fifa and King’s Vovage in hot pursuit. In a close finish. Sea Gift outstayed Teviot Downs to win by a length, with New Metford. who broke i.i the last fifty yards, a length and a half further back in third place. Nell \olo. who got pocketed over the last half mile, got clear in time to fill fourth place. Teviot Downs was a hot favourite with £BO2. Sea Gift carried £455. N.Z. Derby Stakes. Gamble took charge at the end of iour furlongs and went away from his field at the mile post to register a very easy win in the New Zealand Derby Stakes. He has improved considerablv with the extensive racing he has had and his performance on this occasion was meritorious. He is by Tack Potts from Princess Ann. both being imported from America. Gamble was bred by his owner. Mr T. C. Butcher, and he was developed, trained and driven by M. B. Edwards. There was considerable delay at the start. When the barriers were released Moana Tama.
