WELLINGTON, November 6. * A belated announcement that the prohibition on export from New Zealand of boneless beef artd veal had been inoperative for some time was made bv the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon C. E. Macmillan, .in the House in reply to a question by Mr W i lkin son (E gm on t). “ The prohibition was under instruction of the British Ministry of Agriculture, dated July,” replied the Minister. “ This read that until future policy was decided upon no further quantities of beef were to be loaded to steamers. This definite instruction was given effect to and all exporters were notified. Subsequently, when the United Kingdom Government was prepared to release the veal and boneless beef of one operator, I refused this unless the holdings of all other operators were released. This permission was finally obtained, so that boneless beef and veal held by all operators as at July 12, the date of the Order-in-Council, have been released.” Bible in Schools. Over three hundred residents of Akaroa who petitioned Parliament asking for legislation empowering the Akaroa Borough Council to take an immediate poll on the question of the weekly half-holiday received a very favourable report from the Public Petitions Committee in the House today. The committee recommended Government most favourably to consider the petition and to make the necessary legislative provision in the Local Legislation Bill, which is at present before Parliament. Case for Reduction. That there is a case for reduction of interest and other concessions to those who secured loans from the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Rehabilitation Fund is the opinion of the Public Petitions Committee, which reported to-day to the House on a number of petitions from Hawke’s Bay County, Napier, Hastings and Wairoa. The committee had heard considerable evidence, and recommended the petitions to the Government’s favourable consideration. It added, “ In view of the substantial fall in the rate of interest the committee recommends that relief be granted by reduction of interest on all loans made through the Rehabilitation Committee, and, . further, that the free-of-interest period be renewed or extended.” This report was adopted after a brief discussion as the subject had previously been fully debated this session.
