ROWING.

Funds from Art Union Not Available. CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. The Canterbury Rowing Association met last evening at the Canterbury Rowing Club’s boathouse. Mr F. D. Kesteven presided and there were also present: Messrs D. Ree and Ft. E. Nightingale (vice-presidents), IF. Evans, E. V. Velvin, C. A. Stiles. A. T. Evans, O. R. Hervey, R. C. Byers, F. H. Brown, W. G. Atack, W. R. Whittington, R. Sutherland, F. R. Booth, W. Miles, A. A. Sutherland and R. J. Hobbs (honorary secretary). . A letter was received from the Minister of Internal Affairs stating that, he regretted that it was not at present possible to consider requests for art union benefits from sports bodies, as the proceeds of all art unions were being distributed to mayors’ funds and other officially recognised funds for the relief of distress. The request would not be lost sight of and would be considered later when conditions allowed. The Wellington Regatta Club advised tlrat the date of their regatta would be February 16. This had been made possible by the Auckland Association arranging to hold their regatta in March instead of February as originally intended. Mr D. Ree was appointed to the Boating Committee. Inter-club Eights. ,After considerable discussion it was decided that the Inter-club Eights should be held over a mile course, as it would be early in the season. Proposals for a mile and a half race were defeated. The following officials were appointed:— Starters, Messrs H. H. Berry and A. T. Evans; umpires, Messrs F. H. Brown and E. Velvin; the president and secretary to form a sub-committee to arrange for the cartage of boats. It was also decided that the president and secretary should try to arrange for a small charge for admission. The races will be held at Stewart’s Gully on December S. In order to make it easier for the public to follow the racing, it was decided to try to arrange for a loudspeaker to be set up at a suitable point on the course. This would also be available for broadcasting gramophone records between races. The meeting also decided to ask 3YA to broadcast a commentary the night before the races, in the same manner as was done before the Ranfurly Shield games. The cost for the loud-speaker was not to exceed £3. Combined Entry. In order to encourage club oarsmen, it was decided that a combined entry would be accepted from the Sumner, Redcliffs and Cure clubs. It bad been reported that Cure could not provide an eight, but would be pleased to combine. In order that the clubs might have all possible opportunities for practice, boats would be available from Saturday, November 17. This would allow nearly three weeks before the regatta. The Head of the River races will commence on November 24 with all the sculling events. For the first time there would be timekeepers, who would begin a series of records by which the standard of club rowing could be judged. Messrs R. C. Byers, F. Brettell and D. St G. Gunn were appointed. The president proposed that a letter be sent to the Canterbury Rowing Club to congratulate it on its seventy-fifth anniversary. Fie said that be thought it would be fitting if the club were to win the Flead of the River races and the D.C.R. Cup during the season.
