POOL-BETTING.
LONDON, November 5. The House of Commons went into committee on the Betting and Lotteries j Bill. An amendment to restore thg j clause forbidding football pool-betting ! was strongly supported on the grounds j that this was a glaring social evil to which all football associations were opposed, that it led to gambling by boys and girls and that it was now creeping into cricket. It was alleged that pressure had been brought on the Government to drop the provision. Several ( onservative members appealed for a free vote on the question. Sir John Gilmour (Secretary of State) intimated . that the clause had been withdrawn ! owing to a strong difference in the Standing Committee. The amendment was defeated without a division.
