A TRIUMPH.

Horse Treated for Injury This Morning. . DECISION TO START. In record winning time for a two | mile race in New Zealand. Indianapolis j won the thirty-first New Zealand Trot- i ting Cup by a length from Blue Moun- i tain at Addington to-day. Harold | Logan was three lengths away third. Indianapolis was suffering serious effects from his split hoof during the early hours of this morning, and hot fomentations had to be applied and a veterinary surgeon summoned. Not until within two hours of the race was it decided to start Indianapolis. That he triumphed over the best field that has ever contested the race, and estab- ; lished a new record, qualifies him for j recognition amongst the greatest , pacers that have graced our tracks. j lie was sixth when the field had ; settled down, but moved up to fifth position at the end of four furlongs, j and was fourth at the mile disc. Just | after passing the mile-and-a-half post j he shot to the front, with Blue Moun- j tain after him. Harold Logan flew j into third place at the mile and five j furlongs peg. Indianapolis was first into the ; straight, but Blue Mountain reached j his wheel at the distance post. E. C. j M’Dermott then drew the whip on ; Indianapolis, and Mr G. J. Barton’s j big horse responded like a lion and | won like *the great horse that he is. j At the winning post he had an ad- j vantage of a length from Blue Moun- j tain and three lengths from Harold j Logan, with the rest of the field strung ! out, the next to finish being Roi l’Or. j Impromptu, Sunny Morn and Lindbergh. Indianapolis was bred by Mr 11. F. Nicoll and he was purchased by the Dunedin sportsman, Mr G. J. Barton, for £6OO and certain contingencies. He is a five-year-old horse by the import ed American sire Wrack from the American-bred mare, Estelle Amos. Early Leaders. The field was in perfect line when the barriers were released, but Rollo broke badly. When half a furlong had been covered Silver de Oro broke badly and nearly fell. Sunny Morn shot to the front and made the pace from Blue Mountain, Mountain Dell, Impromptu, Sir Guy and Indianapolis. On reaching the stand the order was Sunny Morn, Blue Mountain. Mountain Dell. Impromptu, Indianapolis, Sir Guy. Rollo. Roi l’Or, Lindbergh. Red Shadow and Harold Logan. They raced in close formation and at the end of a mile Mountain Dell joined Sunny Morn in the lead, with Blue Mountain and Indianapolis together just behind them. Then came Rollo. Impromptu. Lindbergh, Sir Guy, Roi l’Or and Harold Logan with Red Shadow last.

Mountain Dell and Indianapolis went to the front at the mile and a half post and half a furlong further on Indianapolis rushed to the front with Blue Mountain after him. The pair drew right away from their opponents. Three furlongs from home Harold Logan flew into third place and the race concluded as already described. The Sectional Times. The sectional times were:—Two furlongs, 35 l-ssec; half-mile, lmin S 2-5 sec: six furlongs, lmin 40 2-ssec; mile. 2min 12 2-ssec; mile and a quarter, 2min 44 l-ssec; mile and a half, 3min 16 3-ssec: mile and three-quarters. 3min 46 3-ssec; full distance. 4min 15 4-ssec. The previous best winning performance over two miles was done by Satin King, who recorded 4min 16sec when he won the Courtenay Handicap in November last. Harold Logan was responsible for a magnificent performance in conceding his field upwards of 72 yards and finishing third in 4min 12 2-ssec, which is the fastest time ever recorded in a race in New Zealand or Australia. Harold Logan paced his four furlongs in lmin 2 l-ssec, the mile in 2min 6 3-ssec, mile and a half in 3min 9 4-ssec, and the full distance in 4min 12 2-ssec. After the race. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes presented the gold cup to Mr G. J. Barton. He Had No Complaints. E. C. M’Dermott, who drove Indianapolis. said subsequently that the W T rack horse went as if he were a bit sore for the first three furlongs. The horse was inclined to hang out at the turns, but otherwise he had a nice clear drive. As far as he could see. it was a good clean race. “ Anyway,” he added. “ I have no complaints to make.” Though Mr G. J. Barton has headed the winning owners’ list in Dominion trotting for several years, he has never previously won the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Indianapolis was also the first cup-winner to be driven by E. C. M’Dermott.
