STATEMENTS RESENTED.

Brighton Council Replies to Mr A. E. Armstrong. Resentment was expressed at last night’s meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council at certain remarks made by Mr A. E. Armstrong in the course of an interview with the Minister of Employment (Hon J. A. Young). The matter arose when Councillor R. E. Holloway asked whether it was proposed to take any further action with regard to certain statements made by a recent deputation which waited on the Minister of Employment in Wellington. The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) said he was pleased that the matter had been brought up. He considered that such statements should be publicly contradicted. On the motion of Councillor Holloway the following resolution was unanimously adopted:—“That the council-strongly resents the statement made by Mr A. E. Armstrong, a member of the deputation which recently waited on the Minister of Employment, saying that as a result of No. 5 scheme men being sent to camp their wives were in danger of molestation. Further that the relief worker employed on the steam roller was being paid at relief rates of pay. The latter statement is incorrect, as award rates were paid. A suggestion was made that more police were necessary in New Brighton. The police are doing their work to our entire satisfaction.”
