Meeting of St Columba’s

Ladies’ Guild

Members of the St Columba’s Ladies’ Guild conducted a pleasant card evening on Saturday last, in the Parish Hall, in aid of the funds of the guild. A large number of players participated. The hostess for the evening was Mrs E. Joyce, who supplied those present with a dainty supper. The first prizes were awarded to Mrs Davis, sen., and Mr ,T. Drake, and the second prizes were awarded to Mrs N. Davis and Mr R. Sloan. Old Timers' Sports Club Concert. A concert in aid of tiie funds of the Old Timers’ Sports Club was held in the Orange Hall, Hornby, on Wednesday evening. The programme, which was presented by members of the Prebbleton Dramatic Club, attracted a large audience. The programme was under the direction or Mrs F. D. Carter. At the conclusion of the concert the artists were enteitained to supper, and the evening concluded with dancing, Miss Poppy Hammond supplying the music. 3?.W.M.TT. Meeting. A meeting of the Hornby P.W.M.U. was held on Wednesday Mrs A. Mackie presided over a large attendance of members. Letters from New Hebrides and Opotiki, dealing with the work in the mission fields, were read. A paper on ” The Religion of China ” was read by- Mrs Busch. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs and Miss Mackie. Obituary. The death has occurred of Mr W. Kemp thorn e. an old identity of the Hornby district. He was born at fcst Newlands East, Cornwall, England, in 1851, and came to New Zealand with his wife (nee Elizabeth Ann Tonkin) in the sailing ship Glenlora. After residing at Lawford, Weedons, for many years, he finally settled at Hornby with his son. Mr W. J. Kempthorne. Mr Kempthorne is survived by two sons and four daughters; Messrs W. J. Kempthorne and J Kempt borne, Mrs A. Taylor, Mrs E. Nottingham (flornby), Mrs F. Goodman (Marshland) and Mrs G. Batstone (Kirwee). The funeral took place at the Weedons Cemetery, the Rev C. H. Kendon (Springston) conducting the services at the house and at the graveside.
