NOT PRACTICABLE.

Elaborate Pound Scheme of 1931-32. An acute position having arisen over the supply of food for the relief of distress, a special sub-committee of the

Metropolitan Relief Association is at present considering schemes that, it is hoped, will immediately augment the association’s stores.

A meeting of those interested in the problem was held yesterday afternoon. Several schemes were discussed in committee. and it was stated subsequently that the committee would meet again this afternoon.

The secretary of the association (Mr V. French) said that it was almost certain that the pound scheme of 1931-32 would not be reinstated. A scheme for immediate assistance was required, and it was to this end that the subcommittee’ was working.

An extremely acute position had been reached in connection with maintaining supplies for the work of relieving distress.

With some 2000 needy families to assist, it was feared that it would be difficult adequately to meet the position from the money collected in response to the Mayor’s appeal. The small reserve held by the Relief Association was completely exhausted, so that consideration of additional methods for supporting the work has become urgent. It has been suggested that the association could meet its needs through the critical period of the next few weeks by some adaptation of the pound scheme.

The elaborate pound scheme of 1931-32 was not considered practicable, but it was thought that some modified scheme of short duration offered possibilities.

Mr French said that an announcement as to the decisions of the subcommittee would be made known in a few days.
