Opposition to the present Religious Exercises in Schools Bill was expressed at a meeting of the Wellington branch ol the New Zealand Educational Institute last evening. A motion, carried unanimously, stated that the branch, “ considering the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill at present before Parliament even more insidious than its predecessors, reaffirms its opposition to any such type of legislation.” A reduction from 6d to 3d in the payment made for hacks’ feet by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was decided upon at last evening’s meeting of the council of the society. Last year the payments totalled £54, and the Finance Committee recommended that the question of reducing the. amount be considered Mr C H. Lawrence, chairman of the committee, said that the hawks were a menace to the game .birds, but most of those on which the royalty had been paid had been trapped and would be destroyed in any case. On the motion of Mr C. D. Wheeler, chairman of the Game Committee, the royalty was reduced from Gd to 3d for each pair of hawk’s feet.
