SLAVES IN RED SEA.
British Destroyers Active in Suppressing Trade. , LONDON, July IS. The fact that some of the fastest destroyers in the British Navy were recently sent to the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf to assist in the suppression of the slave trade, was revealed by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Bolton Eyres-Monsell, at a function in London to celebrate the centenary of the emancipation of slaves throughout the Empire. The Minister said that fourteen ships were constantly engaged in the suppression of the slave trade in that part of the world, and the faster ships were sent in consequence of the horrible rumour that some ships were too slow, and that dhows engaged in the slave trade were able to tie stones to the legs of the slaves they had on board and cast them overboard. The faster ships showed that the rumour was unfounded.
